2010 World Cup Betting On Slovenia vs U.S.
Even though Slovenia is the only squad in Group C that has a victory, the U.S. was liked in World Cup bets online at the sportsbook to beat Slovenia.
The U.S. was a -230 favorite on the money line with a total of 2.5 under. On the 3-way soccer line the U.S. was Even, Slovenia was +270 and the Draw was +225. It was thought there may not be a lot of scoring in this competition as Slovenia only landed 1 goal versus Algeria and it came when Algeria was down to 10 men when the US might only manage one against England and it was a lucky goal as the England goalkeeper poorly misplayed an easy shot.
In reality the match between England and the United States did not mean a whole lot in terms of moving on from Group C, even though the U.S. feels great about their draw. This game on Friday was a great deal more significant. It was just significant, particularly with Slovenia having gotten a victory vs Algeria. The US were not going to progress to the knockout round if they had lost this competition. England is not going to lose to Algeria so the US has to at least get a draw on Friday.
The United States entered this game on Friday as a favorite which is not a role that the US is accustomed to. It could also be a problem. Landon Donovan has already mentioned that Slovenia has quite excellent team chemistry and that the US team needed to play pretty well or they’re in danger. Slovenia seemed to frustrate the United States team, being that they play defense first and foremost. Donovan has called this match a must-win as the US would probably be out of the competition with a loss.
This competition on Friday was truly a challenging one for the U.S.. There was no assurance they were going to beat Slovenia, though there have been high expectations for the US team. In reality, Slovenia’s Andrej Komac has already gone on record proclaiming that his team would conquer the US on Friday. That would be an upset but not a big shock since Slovenia defeated Russia and the Czech Republic in qualifying, demonstrating they’ve got the talent to compete at a high level.
The game ended up being a frustrating and controversial one, as the U.S. looked to have won in a 3-2 win at the last minute. A call from referee Koman Coulibaly took away the third goal from the US squad. Since he was not required to explain himself, the call basically stood and the US ended up with a 2-2 tie instead of the victory that they thought they had. Had they won that game, would have pulled off a historic victory, since they had come back from a 2-0 deficit. The United States squad is still uncertain what foul was called and why the victory was stolen from them. For his part, the referee who called the foul may be benched for the rest of the World Cup for what has widely been seen as a totally unfair call.
